PP vs PET Strapping: Know the Difference and Choose the Right Tape

3rd November 2026 - by Simon

The quick read: PP strapping is generally softer, more flexible and translucent, while PET is stronger, stiffer and usually opaque.

Choosing the correct strapping tape isn't always straightforward, especially when you've got an old roll with no label or packaging.

Two of the most common materials used for plastic strapping are PP (Polypropylene) and PET (Polyester). Although they can look very similar, they have different properties and aren't necessarily interchangeable. Here's how to tell them apart and choose the correct tape for your strapping machine.

So what is the difference between PP and PET strapping?

  • PP (Polypropylene) strapping is generally lighter, softer and more flexible. It's commonly used for bundling parcels, securing cartons and other light to medium-duty applications.
  • PET (Polyester) strapping is typically stronger and stiffer, with better tension retention. It's commonly used for securing heavier loads, including pallets, timber and building materials.

Both materials are available in different widths, thicknesses and strengths, so it's important to select the correct specification for your application.

How can you tell PP and PET apart?

If you've got an unlabelled roll of strapping, there are a few simple things you can check.

1. Hold the tape up to the light

  • PP strapping is often slightly translucent. You may be able to see the shadow of your fingers through the tape.
  • PET strapping is commonly more opaque, allowing little or no light to pass through.

This is a useful first check, although colour and manufacturing methods can affect transparency, so it isn't a guaranteed test.

2. Check the flexibility

  • PP strapping is generally softer and more flexible, making it easier to bend and handle.
  • PET strapping is usually stiffer and offers greater resistance when bent.

If you have samples of both materials, the difference can be quite noticeable.

3. Don't rely on colour

A common misconception is that green strapping must be PET, while other colours must be PP. Although PET strapping is frequently green, both materials are manufactured in various colours. Colour alone is not a reliable way to identify strapping tape.

Does the thickness of the tape matter?

Absolutely!

Two rolls of strapping may have the same width but very different thicknesses and breaking strengths. For example, a 12mm wide tape that's 0.40mm thick won't necessarily have the same strength or machine compatibility as a 13mm tape that's 0.60mm thick. When ordering replacement strapping, always check the width, thickness and material against your machine's specifications.

Can you use PET instead of PP?

Not necessarily.
Some strapping machines are designed specifically for PP, others for PET, and some can accommodate both. Even when the tape is the correct width, differences in thickness, stiffness and surface characteristics can affect how the machine feeds, tensions and seals the strapping. Using the wrong material can cause feeding problems, poor seals or damage to the tape.

Still not sure which tape you need?

If you're unsure whether your existing strapping is PP or PET, or you're having difficulty finding a suitable replacement, we're always happy to help. At The Banding Store, we supply a wide range of strapping tapes for different machines and applications. If you can tell us the make and model of your machine, or provide the dimensions of your existing tape, we can help you find a suitable replacement.

Choosing the correct tape now can save a lot of frustration later!
