Why does paper banding tape contain plastic?

The quick read: The plastic backing adds strength, adhesion, and moisture resistance.

Many people do not realise that paper banding tapes have a thin plastic backing which is usually 20-30% of the composition. The plastic backing is there for several practical reasons:

Strength and Durability: The plastic backing adds tensile strength to the tape, making it more durable and resistant to tearing. This is particularly important for applications that require the tape to hold securely without breaking. jkvdhl

Adhesion: here needs to be something that when heated can form the bond creating the band. When heated the plastic melts momentarily forming the bond. It is a very simple mechanism.

Moisture Resistance: Plastic backing provides a barrier against moisture and humidity, which can compromise the adhesive quality of the tape. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the seal in environments that are not perfectly dry.

Flexibility and Conformability: The plastic backing allows the tape to be more flexible and conform to irregular shapes and surfaces. This makes it easier to apply and ensures a tighter, more secure banding around objects.

These attributes make plastic-backed paper banding tape a versatile and reliable option for a variety of packaging, bundling, and sealing applications.
